“Those were the days.”

“Those days will never come back again.”

“In my day, you could leave your front door open and come home to find that your neighbour had cleaned your entire house.”

Oh that’s nothing. My neighbour would have a three course meal waiting for me when I got back.”

“Of course people were so much more helpful back then. Not like now…”

You get the idea! As children, we’ve all heard our mothers, grandmothers and dare I say it, anyone over the age of thirty five, drone on and on about how good life was back in the days before fire was discovered. Naturally we were too young to understand what all the fuss was about. We thought ‘our day’ was pretty damn cool. We wore trendy clothes; danced to amazing tunes; watched a never ending stream of great television shows and most of all we thanked heaven that we weren’t born before the days of electricity.

Fast forward a good few years and I may be on the right side of 35 (just about!) but now I can’t stop rambling on and on about how life back in the day was so much better, easier, and all around magical. I think television today is not worth the license fee; I have no idea who is ‘number one’ in record sales because I no longer listen to mainstream chart music; I cannot believe that people are famous just because they appeared in some dodgy reality television series; I believe that childhood is a thing of the past and children know way too much; I think that society is regressing rather than progressing… I think I’m in danger of becoming Victor Meldrew…

That’s why I love memories of my childhood. It may not have been perfect but it’s a time that I know and love. It is my love for all the things from ‘my era’ which has led me to develop this blog. I take great pride in being a 70s baby, an 80s child and a 90s brat! It’s hardly a surprise that I get swept away by nostalgia as I’ve always been a sentimental old fool, but seriously, who wouldn’t get excited when they come across a reminder of a time when everything was so much simpler…

Thank you for your lovely comment Dean B. It is sad that kids today won’t experience the kind of childhood that we had but I’m sure you’ll do everything you can to make sure that your daughter’s is as fun and carefree as possible. Your blog is very entertaining. I especially liked London calling, and I’ve made up my mind to see Sylvia Plath’s house. Best wishes, Angel x

I agree with you … I love my childhood too and it’s sad that my daughter won’t have the kind I had… But then again, I think she’s experiencing a good childhood too, especially since we live in a small village and she’ll be going to a small village school. Anyway, thanks so much for following Little Steps. Can’t wait to explore your blog too. All the best, Dean.
